Aluminum Most Aluminum is treated to seal the surface, this is called Anodizing, but if the surface treatment is scratched or worn e.g. a rope rubbing on the mast of a boat, the raw aluminum will become exposed to the elements and will begin to oxidize. Ballistol is a suitable oil for aluminum and can be applied to protect against this and will not discolor the natural silver colour of the aluminum. Ballistol is widely used on the aluminum parts of motorcycles i.e. the gearbox casings and does a great job in improving the appearance of a dulled casing.
